1 Professor Ann-Lii Cheng has contributed significantly to the basic knowledge and clinical application of molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Living in the part of the world plagued by HCC, Prof. Cheng has devoted his career in substantiating a solution. Since year 2004 he has been heavily involved in the development of sorafenib and lenvatinib, two pivotal drugs in the first-line treatment of HCC, and recently the discovery of a new regimen, atezolizumab plus bevacizumab, which is considered an epoch-making breakthrough in this field, and remains standard-of-care of advanced HCC until now. He severed as global coordinating PI of all of these pivotal international studies, and was first or corresponding authors of the final publications in Lancet Oncology, Lancet, and NEJM, respectively. He also served similar roles in more than 30 other global studies of HCC. His research team at National Taiwan University has been recognized as one of the most conspicuous translational research groups in exploring the frontier of HCC treatment.
